Directors’ Message
“One of the central challenges in T1D is to promote immune tolerance so that autoimmune assault of islets can be stopped and immune rejection of transplanted beta cells can be prevented. The NorCal COE team combines expertise in immunology, beta cell biology, and stem cell biology at UCSF and Stanford to define how immune tolerance is broken in T1D, develop novel therapies to restore tolerance, and design resilient stem cell-derived islets that can be transplanted without the need for immunosuppression. Our Center aims to enhance the depth, complementarity, and productivity of investigators at UCSF and Stanford and work collaboratively to advance curative therapies for T1D.”
