Dr. Edgar Engleman

Professor of Pathology and of Medicine (Immunology and Rheumatology)

He is an American pathologist and physician-scientist who specializes in cancer immunology research. He investigates how myeloid immune cells—especially dendritic cells and macrophages—control immune tolerance and inflammation in autoimmune and metabolic diseases. His group uses advanced imaging and sequencing tools in both mouse models and human tissues to identify immune pathways that fail in type 1 diabetes (T1D). These insights are guiding the development of new strategies to restore tolerance, protect β cells, and improve long-term outcomes for islet transplantation and Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) therapies.
